Gavin Martha Moira and Bob spent a pleasant few hours in the garden barrowing compost and trimming grass through hail stones, snow and sunshine in equal measures. The garden looks great, is tidy as it has ever been and is presenting a canvas in which to paint the summer. So much work has gone into the grounds - can we use it to kick start some summer projects?
The Meeting on Sunday the 24th
We spoke about all sorts of things. workfair, job center plan, common good day event - Govan Fair link, badges, planning why we are here, Mark Thomas? Action going forward, practical tasks and vision, Lady Elder research, allotments Pollock Park, Habit and repute, artwork, Get to know young folk, language and communication, start putting ideas down for strategy, talking to each other, find folk whose job it is to do things young folk, getting serious, harmony, loss of locals mediators, Finding strength from other organisations.
You will find a recording (2 hours) here of the proceedings:

There are some notes from Martha Wardrobe (which have been added to files to be found on the Elder Farm Community Trust Group site mb)
Rules
There needs to be some basic rules for using the garden. A bit of
introductory text that can be given to visitors and helpers who come into the space. And something like the wee folding thing given out at the dinner nights with procedures.
Work
One thing we need to remember. Working hard is not a merit on its own. Slaves work hard and progress little. Kelvinside Meadows work very hard but their gardening work alone will not save them from the developers. Who is watching peoples backs while they garden, how do we secure these spaces to allow folk to garden (or not). This is also important work. Need to remember at present it is the work that needs done that is the most important, not the work we want to do
Gardening
The garden as we agreed is one aspect of the project, there are a mass of other activities that folk can pursue in the space. We cannot get on to folk for not gardening and be led by only what happens concerning gardening. If we are to secure this space and develop the building we need to be open to a whole range of activities and allow folk the freedom to develop them.
Invigoration
It is already March and time is marching on. Can we strive for a summer to remember. The Govan Fair is not a long way off. Can we start to build towards that day (Saturday Family Fun Day) to showcase our project and its possibilities. Allow creativity and fun to dominate the scene for a few months.
Group name Common Good Glasgow
Common-Good needs to be treated as a verb a doing thing. It is a
responsibility a collaboration a collective process. A title that has to
be earned not just a group name that we should treat off the cuff. We are at a point where we understand what the common good consists of. We now have to start to implementing the process of the working commons.
Govan Fair?
Would it be an idea to work towards a public profile and an open day for the Saturday of the Govan Fair. A public awareness day for farm, garden, common good, get the big tent up in garden, reshuffle activities, food the whole caboodle.
If we want Govan to know who we are, what we do, there is no better time to inform them when most of the population of the burgh are on the street. A mass leafleting on fair Friday and a mega event at the garden on the fair family fun day on the Saturday. That's 7th 8th June. Which gives us about 12 weeks to:
Ian and Bob to find some funding
Try and connect up with organisations, people who can connect with the young arsonists and young people to show them the garden is an exciting place to be.
Put on some amateur drama, bonfire nights, junk sculpture, steampunk, treasure hunts, wellie throwing, karaoke, dug shows or whatever. Create an event space for art and performance, invite folk to do things, punt it on Sunny Govan. This week at the garden...
Last summer was pretty grim around the garden we need to inject a bit of fun back into the place. But enough of what we "could" do. Time for. Hey this is what I am "going" to do.
Also
I am oot in Easterhouse on 23 spreading the common good word if anyone wants to join me help out or chat to folk about the work we are doing in Govan, garden etc. This is the same day as the Lady Elder thing at the park details I am not to sure of. So plenty to do that day:)
